Lose out to leaders but pride stays intact

5:10pm Monday 1st December 2008

Bretforton Ladies 0, Plymouth Marjon 4

DESPITE the rather alarming scoreline the Bretforton girls came away from Saturday’s game with a lot of pride.

League leaders Plymouth have been scoring with ease and their average per game stands at seven.

With that statistic in mind, the Vale side’s defence knew they were going to be in for a tough time.

The visitors went ahead in the first half when the hosts failed to clear the ball from a penalty corner. Bretforton fell further behind in the second half when undone by a brilliant goal and, with legs and minds now tiring, a damage limitation exercise ensued.

The Vale side did conjure up a couple of chances with skipper Lisa Workman just failing to get a stick on the end of her now famous full-length dive routine and a few penalty corners flashed wide.

Player of the match for a second successive week, Kim Payne sparkled and her determination and drive proved a real asset.

The girls must not become too downhearted after the defeat. Tough games like last weekend are why they welcomed promotion and they can certainly learn a lot from playing teams like Plymouth whose ball pace and general skills were extremely sharp.

The match ball was sponsored by E J Payne Builders on a day when the support given the hosts was a huge boost to the players.
