A DEMONSTRATION of the grading and packing of apples under the National Mark Scheme was given in Evesham Central market 75 years ago by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
The scheme was initiated to meet the demand for regular and adequate supplies of home-grown apples to distributors in the large consuming centres.
Mr J Stoddart, of the ministry, said: “Overseas growers, who have been largely instrumental in creating the demand for apples, are the first to admit that no apple in the world can equal a well-grown English apple, either cooking or dessert.”
