100 Years Ago November 14, 1908 Not very much interest was aroused by the annual mayoral elections which took place on Monday. The proceedings at Evesham, where Councillor Cox was re-elected, were commendably brief. We are sure that Alderman Morris was expressing the feelings of all the burgesses when he said he hoped the mayoress would soon be restored to health. At Evesham, there is no pleasant interlude such as at Stratford-on-Avon when after the formal election the company adjourn to the ante room where champagne and sandwiches are indulged in. At Evesham the loving cup is placed on the desk in full view of the members and there it remains empty. Why it is ever brought out at all on these occasions we can never imagine, unless it is to show it has not been “annexed” during the 12 months.
75 Years Ago November 18, 1933 Mrs Farncombe presided over a company of about 120 members and friends at the November meeting of Pershore Women’s Institute, which included the annual exhibition of produce and arts and crafts shown by members. There were more than 200 exhibits, each one doing great credit to the members. The prize for the highest number of points gained – a silver challenge cup given by Mrs Rusher – was won by Mrs F Wood, who with 18 entries gained 140 points. Mrs Shermer was second with 17 entries and 127 points. Mrs Farncombe presented 32 certificates won by members at the produce exhibition at Worcester in October. Good work has been done by members in making garments for the unemployed and some of these garments were shown. A special attraction for the evening was a fascinating demonstration of chocolate cookery by Miss Ashburner, of Messrs Cadbury Bros.
40 years Ago November 21, 1968 Plans for a temporary Christmas car park in the former Stokes Bomford yard in Swan Lane, Evesham, have fallen through. A plan for a new one in the former Central Market saleyard in Avon Street is being considered. Revealing this to members of the Evesham Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, the chairman, Mrs F M Barber, said the town clerk, Mr N F Davies, was inquiring into the possibility of a short lease on the market premises. One of the advantages of the yard as a car park was that it had 75 car parking spaces and had a separate access and exit. It was also in the centre of the town. Mrs Barber reminded traders that they had agreed to pay for the services of a car park attendant, as their contribution towards the Christmas car-parking scheme.
