100 Years Ago October 31, 1908 THE parish church at Aston Somerville was reopened for public worship on Saturday afternoon by the Bishop of Gloucester. We are glad to be able to state that the edifice has been carefully and thoroughly dealt with and that the present condition reflects great credit upon the architect (Mr C Ford Whitcombe). The total cost of the work was estimated at about £1,350. Most of this has been raised but there still remains about £200 to be provided. Acknowledgement should be made of the valuable help rendered in the collection of funds by Mr W Fitzherbert of Aston Somerville, who has taken great interest in the work of restoration, and who has been a generous contributor. The office for the reopening of a restored church customary in the diocese was used. The bishop was received at the entrance by the minister (the Rev S F Whitehead) and the churchwardens.
75 Years Ago October 28, 1933 THE fourth annual meeting and prize distribution of the Black Horse Homing Society took place on Thursday, when Mr C Cottrill, the chairman, presided over a record attendance. The accounts, which showed a small balance in hand, were presented by the honorary treasurer and received and adopted. The chairman said they would all agree they had enjoyed a most successful season. Their membership had in creased considerably over last year and it had been necessary for this reason to purchase a new clock to cover all their members. They were grateful to Sir Bolton Eyres Monsell for his support again that season. It also gave him very great pleasure to announce that as a result of the race specially flown from Weymouth for the benefit of Pershore Cottage Hospital, they had been able to hand over a sum of money for which they had received the grateful acknowledgement of the committee.
40 years Ago October 31, 1968 LESS than 24 hours after an announcement to the Evesham staff that the Central Market (Evesham) Ltd and the Central Market (Pershore) Ltd were to be amalgamated at Pershore, business at the Avon Street, Evesham, premises ceased on Saturday. Four employees lost their jobs and 13 others were given new jobs at Pershore. The owners, Giles Freshpack, a wholly-owned subsidiary of A J Mackaness Ltd, of Northampton, say the move was made to consolidate their interests in the Vale, because the Evesham market was not sufficiently profitable, because the transfer to Pershore would mean greater administrative convenience and because the larger pershore market had superior facilities to offer. The amalgamation takes out of Evesham a fruit and vegetable wholesale marketing enterprise founded in the town 66 years ago by F and E Beck.
