100 Years Ago October 17, 1908 The Great Western railway company has taken in hand the repair of the bridge which carries their line over the Avon near the common at Evesham. The bridge was built about 1872. It has now been found that owing to the heavy fast trains of the present day, the middle pier is sinking. It has been decided to remove this middle pier and to replace it with a brick and concrete pier with cut-water ends, the track being supported meanwhile on a timber construction. The work, which it is expected will not be finished for five or six months, is in the charge of Mr E W Adamson, for Messrs T B Cooper and Co of Bristol, the contractors. We presume the trains will stop dead at each end of the bridge while the work is in progress; and seeing that the bridge is only a short distance from the station the company might just as well stop the through expresses at the station platform to pick up and set down passengers. This would give Evesham people a quick service to and from Evesham.

75 Years Ago October 21, 1933 The annual general meeting and prize distribution of Pershore Angling Club took place at its headquarters, the Black Horse Hotel, on Friday, when Mr Albert Grinnell presided over a good attendance, supported by Mr James Bundy and Mr H Hick. The accounts, which were presented by the secretary Mr Bundy, showed a balance in hand of £1 10s 8d. Mr Bundy explained that the rent and all bills had been paid. The chairman expressed the members’ appreciation of the work which had been done during the year by Mr Bundy, who had not only carried out the duties of honorary secretary ever since the club started but had also done much practical work on the club’s waters. In this work he had also been assisted by Mr Hick. They had enjoyed a very successful season and had purchased an excellent set of scales and weights and Mr Bundy had presented the club with a handsome oak case for the same.

40 Years Ago October 17, 1968 The building of the Evesham Red Cross Centre and Senior Residents’ Club, on which work has now begun in Briar Close, is expected to be completed by July. The cost of the building and equipping it is estimated to be £11,500, of which £7,500 has already been raised. Designed with the special needs of elderly or handicapped people in mind, the building will include a number of features to ensure the safety and comfort of those who will use it. The Mayor of Evesham (Cllr Tom Smith), whose appeal for funds to build a senior residents’ club, an essential part of the project, has already produced nearly £3,000, told the Evesham Journal yesterday: “I am delighted that visible and tangible progress is now being made. The club and centre will certainly meet a need and, I am sure, will be much appreciated by the users.”
