PUPILS at St Mary’s Primary School in Broadway proved themselves in the bakery and the boardroom by winning a contract to sell a new type of bread in a village store.

The children had been working on a project to design and market bread for Warner’s Budgens and pitched a presentation to owner Guy Warner and other members of staff in July.

They put their business skills to good use and designed a logo and packaging. They also thought about the nutritional content of the product. The winning loaf was called Cinnamon Yornado by the Tu Tone team.

It was made up by artisan bread maker Bread & Co and sold in the store on Saturday, October 18, in aid of CLIC Sargent, a charity supporting terminally ill children.

Initiatives such as this have earned Warner’s Budgens a gold award in the Food and Drink Federation Community Partnership Awards.

The awards, which took place in London last week, reward organisations that make a positive difference to communities.

Warner’s Budgens was presented with the prize in the local community category for its initiatives.

They include sponsoring local events such as the Cotswold Life Food and Drink Awards 2008, adopting primary schools and stocking more than 700 products made or grown locally.

Mr Warner said: “I am thrilled we have won this particular award as it recognises our team’s ongoing efforts in really wanting to put something tangible into our local community.”
