PUPILS at St Mary’s Primary School in Broadway proved themselves in the bakery and the boardroom by winning a contract to sell a new type of bread in a village store.

The children had been working on a project to design and market bread for Warner’s Budgens and pitched a presentation to owner Guy Warner and other members of staff in July.

They put their business skills into good use and designed a logo and packaging and considered the nutritional content of the product.

The winning loaf was called Cinnamon Yornado by the Tu Tone team.

It was made up by artisan bread maker Bread & Co and sold instore on Saturday, October 18 in aid of CLIC Sargent, a charity which supports terminally ill children.

Initiatives such as this have earned Warners Retailer a gold award in the prestigious Food and Drink Federation Community Partnership Awards.

The awards, which took place in London last week, reward organisations across the food chain that make a positive difference to the communities in which they operate.

Warner’s Budgens was presented with the prize in the local community category for its various initiatives.

This includes sponsoring local events such as the Cotswold Life Food and Drink Awards 2008, adopting primary schools in the towns and villages it has a store in and stocking more than 700 local products.

Mr Warner said: “I am thrilled we have won this particular award as it recognises our team’s on-going efforts in really wanting to put something tangible into our local community.”
