BELL RINGING: In accordance with ancient custom the bells of St Peter’s Church will be rung on St Thomas’s Day, December 21. The ringing will begin at 6am for approximately 45 minutes. We are all grateful to David Hammond and his band of bell ringers for this fitting start to the Christmas season.
CAROL SINGING: The annual carol singing at the Jubilee Tree will be held on Christmas Eve, starting at 6.30pm. All are invited to join in the singing and to enjoy the mulled wine and mince pies. Enquiries to Richard Ingles (01386 853306).
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: A number of recent incidents such as vehicle damage, bottle throwing at property, and other vandalising, are cause for concern. Though the village is comparatively free from such incidents, compared to some other areas, even the most trivial incident is unacceptable. Village Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators are keen to help and residents are encouraged to report incidents to their area co-ordinator, details are listed in the Village News. Incidents should be reported to the police on 0845 090 1234 (or in Emergency to 999) or to the monthly visit of the police mobile van (dates are given in the Village News).
VILLAGE HALL: As a result of the recently held ‘Soup Kitchen’ the sum of £411 was raised for village hall funds. The organiser, Jennie Bond, wishes to thank all those who provided and served a marvellous selection of soup and pies, and all those who supported the event.
WILLERSEY FOOTLIGHTS: Chairman, Neville Jelfs, reports that as a result of the 2008 ‘London’ Show the sum of £1,000 has been donated - £500 to Cancer Research and £500 to the Village Hall Fund.
The annual general meeting of the Footlights will be held on January 30 when details of the 2009 May Ball and 2010 Show will be discussed.
CANCER RESEARCH UK: The results of the recent collection show that the house-to-house collection (Willersey) amounted to £764; the Willersey Post Office box £30; and the Saintbury house-to-house £74. Jane Hammond, local organiser, wishes to thank all, collectors and subscribers, for such a generous response. The amount raised is an increase of £80 over the previous year.
MUNCH BRUNCH: The next lunch at the Methodist Schoolroom will be held on Wednesday, December 17. Enquiries to Elizabeth Ingles (853400). Meals can be delivered if required.
WEDNESDAY CLUB: The two November meetings were again very well attended to hear, firstly, David Howe on Laughter is the Best Medicine (the title lived up to its name), and secondly, Gordon Ottewell paid a return visit to speak on Nature All Around Us. To end the current season, members and friends visited Dumbleton Hall for their annual Christmas lunch.
The club resumes on Wednesday, January 7, in the village hall at 2.45pm.
