On Friday last, members of Shipston Music Society enjoyed a talk illustrated with music by record producer Siva Oke. Her label is SOMM (Siva Oke Music Management). She has two main aims, to encourage new talent to gain professional recording exposure under SOMM “NEW HORIZONS” and secondly, to fill gaps in the music catalogues, regularly using re-mastered historic recordings. The latter category was beautifully demonstrated with recordings by such wonderful performers as Constant Lambert and a memorable performance by Moura Lympany playing a St.Saens piano concerto during the “Proms” in 1943 including the ecstatic reception by the wartime audience.
Siva Oke originally learned her craft with EMI at a time when they could still afford to take chances and the bottom line was not yet King. This freedom meant that many performers, who later went on to become international stars, could launch their careers and consequently, Siva was able to meet and get to know many very famous music personalities.
The SOMM catalogue contains a wide variety of wonderful CDs, a number of which were enjoyed by the members throughout the evening.
The next meeting will be on December 12 and will be a live concert of Christmas Music given by Avon Opera. For details contact Martyn Holden 01608 661808.
